My soon to be 4 year old son is starting to learn more about letters. I had all these old wooden letters from his nursery in our previous house that were just sitting around. I saved them knowing that I wanted to do something with them but was waiting for the right inspiration.
I had the wood letters created from craftcuts.com back in 2011 in different heights and 5 different coordinating fonts. Then I hand painted them to coordinate with the colors in his nursery.
In the old house they were placed around the room on top of a chair rail. You can also see some paintings I did for him with fun colors and simple graphic outlines. I didn't want to do the same thing in this house so I decided to create a canvas with the dimensional letters (we kepts in animal paintings though).
First, I played around with placement on the 36 x 48inch canvas I bought at Michaels for $20 (50% off sale on $39.99 full price). Then I painted the canvas with some old interior pain I had lying around the house from our summer interior paint job on the new house. Once dry, I added the letters back on, played around with the placement just a bit more, and glued it down with gorilla glue. You can see the preliminary results in the photo.
I'm not a hoarder. Trust me, I'm the first one to throw something away if I can't envision another purpose. These letters just stuck with me. I knew that I wanted to keep them, remember them, and repurpose them. Maybe it's my way of not letting go of the nursery memories. Whatever the reason, I really enjoyed creating this piece for him. Most importantly, my little guys loves his new art piece and it doubles as a learning tool to help him learn his letters!
